Lopez Muniz spent two years at the helm of Malaga and led them to promotion to the top-flight before leaving to take over at Racing Santander 12 months ago.
The 40-year-old led Racing to a 12th-placed finish in La Liga but asked to be released from his contract at the end of the last season.
Malaga have been on the lookout for a new coach following Antonio Tapia's decision to step down at the end of the campaign.
