Yankees use the long ball to beat A's and keep up with Rays
Baseball Betting Lines
08/30/2010 - Bronx, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano each had three hits, including a home run, as the New York Yankees powered past the Oakland Athletics, 11-5, in the opener of a four-game series.
Nick Swisher went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in for the Yankees, who have won three in a row and kept pace with Tampa Bay. The Rays beat Toronto on Monday, and the teams remained tied for first place in the AL East.
Marcus Thames stayed hot by hitting a three-run homer, his sixth since August 24.
Dustin Moseley had a rough start for New York, allowing four runs in 4 1/3 innings. But Javier Vazquez (10-9) was effective in relief, giving up just one run the rest of the way, while striking out six.
Oakland starter Trevor Cahill (14-6) had given up only seven runs (four earned) in his last six starts, but turned in his shortest start of the season Monday. In four innings, Cahill gave up eight runs on a season-high nine hits and two walks and took the loss.
Jeff Larish batted 3-for-4 with a double, homer and four RBI for the A's, who were coming off series wins at Cleveland and Texas.
Oakland got on the scoreboard in the first inning, when singles from Coco Crisp and Daric Barton, and a walk to Kurt Suzuki loaded the bases with nobody out. Jack Cust's sacrifice fly got one run home, and Larish later hit a two- run single for a 3-0 lead.
But the Yankees tied the game in the home half, thanks to a run-scoring single by Cano and two-run double from Swisher.
After a scoreless second inning, the Yankees grabbed the lead in the third, when Teixeira and Cano hit back-to-back homers just over the wall in right field.
Larish countered with his own solo blast in the fourth inning, a monster shot to right field that got Oakland within 5-4.
But Ramiro Pena's RBI single in the bottom half got the run back for New York, which added five more runs in the fifth. After Teixeira led off with a double, Cano singled him home and moved to second on the throw.
Cano was the final batter faced by Cahill, who was then replaced by Henry Rodriguez. However, Rodriguez didn't fare much better. Cano moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Swisher's double before Rodriguez hit Jorge Posada with a pitch. Thames then provided the big blow, sending a three-run shot to left for an 11-4 lead.
Vazquez had taken over for Moseley in the top of the fifth and shut the A's offense down. He gave up two hits, both of which came in the eighth inning, when Larish hit an RBI ground-rule double.
Game Notes
The eight earned runs given up by Cahill were a season high...Teixeira's homer was his 29th of the season...Cano's was his career-high 26th. He hit 25 last season...New York has won six of the seven matchups with Oakland so far this season.

March Madness odds and printable March Madness brackets
With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship. Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92. After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points. Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1. Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years. With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed. UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern. Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier. OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak. Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four. It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta. But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.

El Duque expected to throw Tuesday
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez, sidelined at spring training because of arthritis in his neck, is expected to resume throwing on Tuesday.
Hernandez received a cortisone shot Thursday after leaving camp and returning to New York to have his neck examined. The 41-year-old right-hander is penciled in as the team's No. 2 starter behind Tom Glavine.
El Duque's health is a major issue for the Mets, who won the NL East in 2007 and came within one victory of the World Series. Their aging and unsettled rotation is a big question mark this year.
MySportsbook.com has the Mets as -110 favorites to repeat as NL East champions odds.
Hernandez went 11-11 with a 4.66 ERA last season, including 9-7 with a 4.09 ERA in 20 starts after the Mets acquired him from Arizona in late May. But he missed the playoffs because of a torn calf muscle.
New York already is without Pedro Martinez, out until at least midseason following rotator cuff surgery. Among those competing for starting jobs are prospects Mike Pelfrey, Philip Humber and Jason Vargas, plus veterans Chan Ho Park, Jorge Sosa and Aaron Sele.
Notes: Mets manager Willie Randolph is excited about two new utility players he could have on his bench: Damion Easley and David Newhan. ''Their value is really all over the place,'' Randolph said. Easley can play anywhere in the infield and could be used as an emergency outfielder, though Randolph said he would prefer to keep the veteran in the infield. Newhan, meanwhile, can play second base, third or any outfield position for the Mets. ''I love versatility,'' Randolph said. ''I love guys that can give me options when I need them to step in.''
